Q&A With Baseball Coach Dave Bates

Q:What kind of expectations do you have for the team, this season?
A:" We will look to a strong pitching staff to pave the way for the Mikes, this season. Attention to detail on defense will make or break the team, this year. We will have to play error free baseball in order to hang with most of the teams in the conference. If we can put the ball in play, and count on our defense to hold opponents to less than two runs and our guys can keep the errors to one or less, per game, we should be o.k. "

Q: Who will be the top contenders in rugged Section 1-A, this year?
A:" As usual, section champion/WPIAL runner-up, California appears to be solid and is always extremely competitive with the Mikes. Unusual parody exists in the much improved programs of Jeff-Morgan, Bentworth, Geibel, and Frazier. There will be few "easy days", for our guys, this season. The old adage has never proven more true that "anyone can knock off anyone, on any given day."

Q: Who are the returning starters?
A:
Marcus Robinson- four-year starting pitcher and third baseman.

   Zach Durbin- catcher/first baseman.

Cody Andrews-centerfield  (injured reserve following complete ACL replacement surgery.) Hopes to be released, soon.

Chuck Gasti-two year starter, shortstop, lead off hitter

Joby Lapkowicz- two-year starter, pitcher, outfielder.

Bill Musgrove- saw time as a starting as well as a relief pitcher and played some infield for the Mikes.

Q: What will be your team strengths and weaknesses?
A: Strengths
+ Deep pitching rotation (8) guys on staff plus J.V.'s
+ Good base running fundamentals
+ Upperclassmen Leadership roles
+ A deep freshman class: seven freshmen; several of whom may play early on

      Weaknesses
-Limited power in the batting line up
-Youth- only five returning starters and a host of underclassmen filling the remaining void.
-Loss of Tim Voithofer (SS) and Aaron "Bama" Thompson (C).

Q:Who will be your top guns on the mound?
A:" Returning junior, starter, Joby Lapkowicz will lead the way for the Mikes followed by junior shortstop/pitcher, Chuck Gast. Marcus Robinson P/3B returns for his senior year as a pitching staff fixture and brings a wealth of composure to the Mikes staff. Billy Muskgrove will round things out for the Carmichaels Diamond men as a starter/closer combination. Also, Zack "Specs" Durbin and Zach Wolfe may see action on the mound for the Mikes, as well."
Q: Who are the Mikes main offensive weapons?
A:"We expect the top 5-6 guys in the order to do most of the damage. Loosely, our line up looks like this, so far:

1. Chuck Gasti

2. Billy Muskgrove

3. Joby Lapkowicz

4. Zach "Specs" Durbin

5. Marcus Robinson

6. Cody Andrews (once healthy)
